Our team sucks. (7.21)
That traffic here really sucks! Today is very sucky, everything sucks.
We want to know the truth, but he kept it dark. (7.22)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
keep dark about sth.
Peter told me when he was to be married, and I promised to keep it dark.
The match was declared off. (7.23)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
declare off,意思是“正式地宣告,以宣布取消或收回承諾等”(make a formal announcement to break off; withdraw from a promise, etc.)
再如,Unfortunately,their engagement was declared off.
Can't you get him off my back? (7.24)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
get off one's back: stop criticizing or bothering sb.
Get off my back! Don't you see how busy I am?
There is no more than thirty yuan in the drawer.(7.25)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
no more than 就相當于only,意思是“只,僅僅”
再如,She is no more than an ordinary worker but she has invented a lot of new machines.
I don't take defeat easily. (7.26)
在非正式的口語表達中,也可以用詞組“take sth. lying down”(to submit to harsh treatment with no resistance)替換動詞take。
例句:Which one could take snub like this lying down?
The dishes in this restaurant pass muster.(7.27)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pass muster,達到標準,還算令人滿意(to be accepted as good enough; to pass an examination or inspection; measure up to a given standard)
例句:His English is very fluent, and his pronunciation just passes muster.
She was not a first-rate violinist, but she passed muster.
Does his absence make a difference to your work?(7.28)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
make a/no/some difference to sb./sth.: have a/no/some effect on sb./sth.
Whether he is here or not will make no difference to our work.
Education can make a big difference to the quality of a person's life.
Being so weak, you might as well to see a doctor.( 7.29 )
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
might (just) as well: (通常用于口語)用來建議做并不是太想做的事情,由于沒有更好的選擇、又只能如此(used to suggest doing something that you do not really want to do, because you have no better ideas.)。
You'll need a new suit at Spring Festival anyway, you might as well have it now.
Since Jack wouldn't take up the job, we might as well ask Richard to do it.
I went to the looking glass to arrange my tie.( 7.30 )
I've titivated in honour of the date.( 7.31 )
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
in honour of sb./sth.: 為了向……
The premier will give a banquet in honour of the distinguished visitors.
