SANTA CLARA, CA January 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world's fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun's position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today's announcement reaffirms Sun's position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.

Sun公司今天宣稱，計劃以8億美元的現(xiàn)金和2億美元的股票期權(quán)收購MySQL公司，以增強(qiáng)其在數(shù)據(jù)庫領(lǐng)域的競爭力。這一交易預(yù)計將于2008年第三季度或第四季度完成。

雖然這一消息多少讓人驚訝，但分析人士認(rèn)為，Sun一直希望增強(qiáng)自己的數(shù)據(jù)庫產(chǎn)品，而MySQL恰好滿足了Sun的這一需求，目前MySQL在全球網(wǎng)絡(luò)公司用戶市場中所占據(jù)的份額已經(jīng)超過80%。Sun公司CEO施瓦茨在接受采訪時說：

我們真的打算收購一家擁有較多市場份額的數(shù)據(jù)庫軟件廠商。網(wǎng)絡(luò)巨人們都在使用MySQL公司的產(chǎn)品，幾乎所有進(jìn)入財富500強(qiáng)的企業(yè)都在各自網(wǎng)站上使用了MySQL公司的軟件。

經(jīng)過多年的發(fā)展，現(xiàn)在MySQL已經(jīng)是目前最為成功的開源軟件公司之一，其數(shù)據(jù)庫技術(shù)已被廣泛應(yīng)用Google、Facebook、百度和諾基亞等各大網(wǎng)站和企業(yè)。對于此次收購MySQL的原因，Sun公司表示：

通過這一交易，MySQL的數(shù)據(jù)庫產(chǎn)品有望獲得更多大企業(yè)客戶，因為Sun服務(wù)器和軟件主要面向大企業(yè)。與此同時，得益于Sun與IBM和戴爾等公司建立的良好合作伙伴，MySQL產(chǎn)品的經(jīng)銷渠道將得到進(jìn)一步拓寬。

雖然是Sun發(fā)明了Java語言，而且貢獻(xiàn)了包括Solaris在內(nèi)很多源代碼，但其軟件領(lǐng)域一直鮮有起色。對于此次收購，有網(wǎng)友也對此提出質(zhì)疑：

從我們買的Sun代理的一個存儲設(shè)備的情況來看，Sun的服務(wù)確實讓人寒心，這樣一家公司，自身諸多問題就夠讓人頭痛的了，今天居然花10億美元收購MySQL，看來確實想在開源和數(shù)據(jù)庫領(lǐng)域重新崛起，只是效果如何，還有待觀望。

據(jù)內(nèi)部人士透露，由于Sun公司業(yè)績逐年下滑，已經(jīng)引起很多員工不滿，對Sun的未來發(fā)展多有憂慮。此次Sun公司持重金收購數(shù)據(jù)庫領(lǐng)域領(lǐng)頭公司，不知能否一掃晦氣，早日實現(xiàn)其公司創(chuàng)始人著名的“網(wǎng)絡(luò)就是計算機(jī)”愿景！
